The Oculus Quest 2’s low price tag and user friendliness make it perfect for first-time VR users. As a new user it can take some time to get fully acquainted with your headset so here are some tips and tricks to help you get started.
Protect your Quest 2 lenses
The Fresnel lenses on your Quest 2 are not like the lenses you might find in a pair of spectacles. In many ways they are much more delicate and need to be treated with special care.
• Clean your headset lenses using a dry optical microfiber cloth whenever they get dirty. Even slightly unclean lenses can become very noticeable when using the headset so it’s important to keep them clean for the best experience.
• Use the glasses spacer accessory that comes with the Quest 2 if you wear spectacles inside the headset. This will help prevent the spectacles from coming into contact with the Quest 2 lenses and marking them.
• Follow this handy guide from Oculus that will show you how to clean your headset and lenses properly.
• Don’t use liquids to clean the lenses (even water) or anything else other than a dry optical microfiber cloth.
• Never expose the lenses to direct sunlight as they can act like a magnifying glass and cause permanent burn damage to the screen behind them.
Consider Quest 2 accessories
Whilst you can play the Quest 2 straight out of the box, there are some ‘must have’ accessories that will help to take your experience to the next level.
• Consider upgrading your head strap. The elasticated stock head strap that comes with the Quest 2 can become uncomfortable even after short play sessions. Purchasing a premium head strap like the ones offered by AUBIKA will give you a much more comfortable experience.
• Also consider upgrading the facial interface when you can; this is the cushiony pad between your face and the headset. The stock Quest 2 facial interface can feel rough on the skin with prolonged use and it soaks up sweat like a sponge. Think about upgrading to one made from a more comfortable material that’s easier to wipe down (e.g. PU leather).
• Don’t purchase the official Quest 2 accessories without shopping around first. In some cases, unofficial accessories provide a cheaper and better alternative.
Prevent VR sickness
VR sickness occurs when exposure to the virtual environment inside the headset causes symptoms similar to motion sickness (e.g. nausea, sweating, dizziness). Whether you experience VR sickness or not depends on how susceptible you are to it and the game you are playing, with some games more likely to cause VR sickness than others.
• Make sure you are well hydrated and playing in a cool environment with a breeze or fan circulating air nearby. Doing these things can help prevent you from feeling uncomfortable in VR.
• Start with games and experiences rated as “Comfortable” on the Quest comfort rating scale. You can find the comfort rating on the store page of each game. If you can handle games at this level without discomfort, then you can tentatively work your way up to the games rated as “Moderate”, then “Intense”.
• Turn on the in-game comfort settings to reduce discomfort. Just be aware that not all games include comfort options and some games may still cause VR sickness even when these options are enabled.
• Don’t try to ‘push through’ the motion sickness. This will only make it worse and prolong your recovery time.
Experience all the Quest 2 has to offer
The Quest 2 has many great features and a lot of different experiences available to try if you know where to look. Here are just a few of the things Quest 2 has to offer.
• Give handtracking a try. This allows you to use your hands to interact with things in VR instead of your controllers. Follow this guide to learn more about enabling and using hand tracking.
• Get your family and friends in on the action by casting your Quest 2 experience to your phone, TV or computer by following this easy how-to-guide.
• Access the many apps, games and experiences that exist outside of the official store. App Lab and Sidequest are alternatives to the official Quest store that together, host thousands of free and paid experiences. App Lab will allow you to download content from inside your headset using the Quest’s web browser whilst SideQuest takes a bit more setup and requires a computer connection to install (you can find the SideQuest setup guide here).
